Why Your Body Stops Responding the Way It Used To

It's one of the most common things we hear from women in perimenopause and menopause, and it's rarely said with any confidence: “I'm doing the same things I always did, and my body just doesn't respond the same way anymore.” It's not a failure of willpower, and it isn't something you're imagining. It's a hormonal shift, and it genuinely does change how your body behaves.

Why fat distribution changes

Oestrogen plays a real role in where the body tends to store fat. In the years before menopause, fat storage is often more evenly distributed or weighted toward the hips and thighs. As oestrogen levels decline through perimenopause and menopause, it's common for fat storage to shift more toward the abdomen. This is a well understood, general pattern of hormonal change, not a personal failing, and it's a big part of why an area that never used to hold onto weight suddenly does, even when nothing else about your diet or activity has changed.

Why skin changes too

The same hormonal shift affects skin. Oestrogen supports collagen production, and collagen is what gives skin its structure, firmness and ability to bounce back. As oestrogen declines, collagen production tends to slow, which is part of why skin can start to feel less elastic and take longer to “spring back” than it used to, particularly in areas that have been through weight changes over the years. Again, this is a general, widely understood pattern of ageing and hormonal change, not something specific gone wrong with your body.

Why the same routine stops working

Metabolism also shifts through this stage of life, generally slowing somewhat as hormone levels change, which means the exact diet and exercise routine that worked reliably in your thirties can simply produce different results in your forties and fifties. None of this means diet and exercise stop mattering. It means the body they're acting on has changed the rules somewhat, and expecting identical results from an identical routine isn't always realistic. It's also why frustration tends to build during this stage: the effort hasn't changed, but the feedback from your body has.

What this means practically

This is the reasoning behind The Menopause Method, the approach we run at our Clarkson clinic for clients going through exactly this stage. Rather than applying a generic body sculpting plan designed without this stage of life in mind, it starts from an honest, one-on-one conversation about what's actually changed for you, and builds a plan around your body as it is now. For some clients that means looking at stubborn belly fat that's shown up somewhere new. For others it's more about loose or sagging skin that's lost some of its bounce. Often it's a combination of both, which is exactly why a one-on-one conversation matters more than a generic package at this stage of life.

It's worth naming the frustration too

A lot of the women we talk to at our Clarkson clinic describe the same emotional pattern alongside the physical one: a growing sense that their body has quietly changed the rules without warning them first. That frustration is understandable. Most of the advice aimed at fat loss and skin firmness is written with a younger body in mind, and simply doesn't account for what's actually happening hormonally at this stage. Naming that gap is the first step. The second is building a plan that actually accounts for it, rather than pretending it isn't there.

None of this is about chasing a number

We're not going to hand you statistics about exactly how much fat distribution shifts or precisely how much collagen production slows, because that varies enormously from person to person and isn't something we'd invent to sound authoritative. What we can tell you is that the pattern itself, hormonal change affecting where your body holds fat and how your skin behaves, is real, widely recognised, and worth factoring into any plan rather than ignoring.

If this sounds familiar, the honest next step isn't another round of the same diet and exercise routine hoping for a different result. It's a conversation, in person at our Clarkson clinic, about what's actually changed for your body, and what a sensible, realistic plan looks like from here.
