If you've spent any time researching non-surgical fat reduction, you've probably come across all three of these names, often mentioned in the same breath as if they're interchangeable. They aren't. Fat freezing, cavitation and laser lipolysis all aim at the same basic goal, reducing stubborn fat in a targeted area without surgery, but they get there through genuinely different mechanisms. Understanding the difference matters more than picking whichever one sounds most impressive on a website.
Three different kinds of energy
Fat freezing, known clinically as cryolipolysis, works by cooling fat cells in a targeted area to a temperature that damages them, without harming the skin above. The body then treats those damaged cells as waste and clears them naturally over the following weeks through the lymphatic system. It's a controlled, gradual process built entirely around cold.
Ultrasound fat cavitation takes a completely different route. Low-frequency ultrasound waves are directed into the treatment area, creating pressure changes that disrupt the membrane of fat cells. Once that membrane is compromised, the contents are released and, again, cleared by the body over time. No cold is involved at all. The mechanism is mechanical and acoustic rather than thermal, which is part of why some clients find it a more comfortable experience session to session.
Laser lipolysis is different again. Laser lipo delivers targeted laser energy that heats fat cells beneath the skin, damaging their structure so the body can process and clear them, similarly to the other two, but by way of heat rather than cold or ultrasound. Three different tools, three different physical processes, one broadly similar end goal.
So which one actually works better?
This is the question everyone wants a straight number for, and it's also the one we won't manufacture an answer to. Every body responds differently to each of these treatments, and how well any of them performs depends on the area being treated, the amount and type of fat involved, and factors specific to your own body. Anyone telling you one option is simply “better” across the board, with a specific percentage attached, is telling you more than any honest clinic actually knows before they've assessed you in person.
What we can tell you honestly is how each treatment tends to feel and fit into daily life. Fat freezing sessions typically involve applying a cooling applicator to the area for a set period, with a sensation that starts intense and numbs as the treatment continues. Cavitation and laser lipolysis sessions tend to be gentler moment to moment, often described as warm or like a firm massage. None of the three usually come with real downtime, though individual comfort during the session varies from person to person, and none of them replace the need for a reasonable diet and activity level around the treated area.
It's not always an either-or decision
Worth flagging too: none of these three actually build or tone muscle. If part of what you're chasing is a firmer, more defined look rather than pure fat reduction, that's a separate conversation involving something like EMS, which works on muscle entirely differently and doesn't touch fat at all. It's easy to lump every body sculpting treatment together, but fat-reduction treatments and muscle-toning treatments are solving different problems, and sometimes the honest answer for someone's goals is actually a combination rather than a single option.
If you're dealing with stubborn belly fat specifically, we've laid out how these options compare for that area in more detail, because the honest answer really does depend on specifics rather than a blanket recommendation.
Why this is a consultation conversation, not a blog conversation
We could keep listing technical differences, but the truth is the right choice for you depends on things a blog post can't assess: the area involved, how much you're hoping to change, what you've already tried, and your own medical history. That's exactly what a consultation at our Clarkson clinic is for. We'll look at the area with you, ask what you're actually after, and talk you through which option, or combination, makes genuine sense for your body specifically, not whichever treatment happens to be easiest to sell that day.
If you're still weighing up fat freezing, cavitation or laser lipolysis, the fastest way to get a real answer is to come in to our Clarkson clinic and let us look at what you're dealing with, rather than guessing from a screen.
